Been slowly getting the hull and appendages ready for the filler coat over the past few days. Adding small bits of epoxy here and there to seal any openings and some bare wood and such.
Today I brushed on a coat of Interlux PrimeKote 404/414 epoxy filler. It's a white epoxy primer base that fills the wood grain. You can spray it or brush it, but whatever you do WEAR A GOOD, PROPER RESPIRATOR! I got a new one at West Marine from 3M
You mix three parts of the filler with one part of the reactor. Mix well and let it sit for about 20-25 minutes. Then add one part (or slightly less) of reducer (thinner really) and mix well. Then brush it on. I added too much reducer I think but it still is working well.
If you look at the pictures you can see brush strokes and patches where I glooped it on. That's OK! The point is to level the surface and to fill any bare wood grain. For this boat I especially needed to fill the grain on the transom and along the deck/hull seam. So I brushed it on and let it start to dry. As it does it then starts to show places where you can still see the seam, so I then brushed or slopped on more. Now I'll let it dry and then tomorrow will sand it flush.
Hopefully only one coat is required. If so then I can start to paint soon!
