Started off the morning by sanding the deck with my random orbital sander and 200 grit paper. It quickly smoothed out the epoxy and I think it looks good. It should take the clear epoxy paint very well!
Then I started the deck hatch. The idea for the deck hatch is to laminate two pieces of 1/32" ply over the deck. When dry I'll cut out the shape. Not sure if it'll be strong enough but I'm trying at least.
When finished there will be a layer of thin neoprene glued to the underside of the hatch and it will be screwed down to the deck over the king plank. In order to give it just slightly more curve than the deck I've put several layers of tape down the middle to raise the inside just a tad. There are three layers of tape down the middle, then outside of that are two layers, and then finally on outsides are one layer. The very outsides of the future hatch meet the deck. This way when pressure is applied in the middle by the closing screw the outsides will have sufficient downward pressure to seal the edges. At least that's the plan... fingers crossed!
