Mixed my first batch of epoxy for the new Star 45x RC Sailboat today. Not much done, but I clear coated and installed the radio tray between frames 4 & 5, and clear coated the limber holes as well.
I started by carving out some notches on the radio tray so that the servo wires can pass through. In the Star 45 Construction Manual I mention doing this, but failed to do it myself last time and I really paid the price too. Getting that rudder servo in the slot without breaking the wire was next to impossible. I finally got it installed but noticed that I actually stripped the coating off one of the wires. So this time I'm doing it properly and have made room for the wires. I'm not sure why they don't simply add them to the design and have the laser cutter do it.
In the picture below you can see my Dremel tool carver and how I started cutting notches. There is one still un-notched in the picture so you can see the original. In the second picture you can see the results. The notches are carved out between the two screw holes on each side.
Then I clear coated both sides and the insides of frames 4 & 5 because it will be impossible to clear coat once they are installed. Then installed them. In the picture below you can see the spacers I used to keep the frames straight. They just sit in there snugly.
Next job: Start cutting stringers and the keelson!
Peace!
